Soot Dwarf Information

What are soot dwarves? Soot dwarves are small mammalian creatures with an intelligence level similar to humans. They stand from 3 to 4 feet tall and have a dense layer of "fluff" coating their body.

Soot dwarves are born agender. Both male and female soot dwarves are genetically identical, and the only thing that determines gender are social roles. This means that any two soot dwarves can reproduce with each other.

Soot dwarves reproduce via spores generated willingly. Soot dwarves only reproduce when they want to, meaning there aren't many "happy accidents". However, stray spores mixing are known to create unwanted children.

Spores only develop into soot dwarves given two conditions: two spores from two different parents must combine, and the combined spore must develop in soot. Soot dwarves are literally born from soot. Their body develops and takes on traits of the soot.

Soot dwarves start as a small puff-ball of dust with eyes. Then, they develop small stick legs, ears, a beak, a mouth. Once the soot dwarf is about six months old, they hibernate in a soot-layered cocoon, emerging a few months later to reveal their fully formed body and limbs. These soot dwarves are like miniature adults. They haven't fully developed their muscles, so they have trouble walking and using their arms. From that point, soot dwarves develop similarly to a human infant. They learn how to speak, sit up, walk on their new legs, and so forth. Since soot dwarves, pre-metamorphosis knew how to walk, it only takes a few weeks for them to learn how to use their new legs.

Soot dwarves take roughly twenty years to reach adulthood. Once reached, they are legally considered adults and can reproduce. The lifespan of a soot dwarf is slightly longer than a human lifespan. Soot dwarves are commonly known to live between 100 to 120 years old.

Soot dwarves are very adaptive to their environment. If they live in a colder climate, they will spontaneously develop long fur. If they live in a hot environment, they may grow scales. You can choose whether to portray these changes as instant or gradual. Soot dwarves are unaware as to why they adapt so quickly. Maybe it will be revealed later on?
