Lankits

Lankits (pronounced Lane-kits) are small fox -like pets that stand about  3/4 of a foot tall. Lankits were discovered almost a year after the outside world was discovered. From the start, lankits were very friendly towards soot dwarves. Lankits would approach campfires and rub against soot dwarf legs, looking for handouts.

In the present day, lankits are a soot dwarf's best friend. Lankits are commonly bred, and bred lankits are known to act similarly to both dogs and cats. Wild lankits, although not as friendly, still make great pets. Wild lankits are more aloof than bred ones, and will disregard most commands your soot dwarf gives them.

Lankits display a variety of traits, including different markings, tails, ears, and gilders. Certain traits may be more difficult to find than others, but there is no official rarity for each one.

A lankit's diet consists of mostly meat, with the occasional berry thrown in. Lankits have needle-like fangs used to pierce tough hides, and their jaws are surprisingly powerful for their size. In the wild, lankits are pack animals, and will hunt together to take down prey larger than themselves. Lankits will ambush prey from the tree tops, gliding down in swarms to pounce on an animal. Lankits have retractable claws to help hold on to their prey. Owners of lankits have to be careful when their pet glides on top of them. Out of instinct, lankits will try and claw their owner as they land. Training a lankit to land only when wearing leather gloves is essential to not get clawed.

Lankits are commonly used for hunting by soot dwarves. Lankits have an enhanced sense of hearing, and they can hear the soft patter of prey from a mile away. Using wind drafts, lankits can suspend themselves in the air for about thirty seconds before descending. Once their prey has been spotted, lankits will let out a sharp chirp, imitating a bird, to let their pack know what they saw. Different toned chirps indicate different types of prey.
